My First Date With Vera (MiCasaVerde Vera Lite)

This post follows on from my earlier one – An Exploration Into A MiCasaVerde Vera Lite World

My Vera Lite arrived the other day and surprisingly the first thing I wanted to do was to see if it really could control my Sonos Music System. An interesting first choice you might think, especially considering the Z-Wave functionality and devices I’d just bought. But being a Sonos lover, i’d been intrigued by a post i saw on the MiCasaVerde forum a while back, and it really tweaked my interest .

So, unpacking the unit from its very plain packaging, I plugged the ‘Leaf’ into a network and power point and then powered her on. Running DHCP I looked out for the new IP and the via the browser logged on.

Next job was to create a device and after following the published – MiOS Wiki Sonos Plugin guide; a Sonos device quickly appeared on the Devices tab under ‘Other’ and ‘All’. A quick look up of the IP of my ‘Living Room Sonos’ and I updated the Device settings to reflect the zone I wanted to control.

This all looks pretty straight forward i thought, hey I can do this !!.. BUT …. Suddenly after a refresh or something I did, (still not sure what), the device just disappeared !!!! I looked back under Devices, under Other’ and ‘All’ but nothing was there.. I looked in Scenes and Advance and nothing was listed, all that remained of my endeavours was the xml/Luup files I’d installed moments earlier still sitting in the App/Dev area??

Undeterred as this was only the first hour of my parenting of this new Vera unit I thought I’d try again, but alas following the same steps again nothing happened, no device even appeared this time?

Now for me it’s always a worry when something that looked quite straight forward, doesn’t work as you thought it should. šŸ˜¦

Anyway, it was getting late so I thought I’d try something different and decided to install something from Vera’s very own App Store. The store’s listing is both limited and specialised, which basically means it doesn’t cater very well for your generic browser (like me) as the majority of the apps seem much more device/component related, rather than as standalone apps. I eventually stumbled across a Wake Up On LAN app that would allow me to boot a PC up with a magic packet via Vera. So clicking the install option, the software was neatly downloaded and a confirmation record appeared under ‘My App’ listing, along with a new device under my Device list.

That’s Great ! A new device to play with and a quick check of it’s setting showed that I could trigger a number of PCs via it (Nice!).. Feeling more confident, I thought I’d try to create a Sonos device again, but sadly still nothing happened, no device appeared and to make matters worse I’ve now lost my WOL app !!

Why does something that looked so straight forward, not work as you expected it too !?! šŸ˜¦

Undeterred I noticed there was a firmware update available so I proceeded to update the device, plus so I could really could start afresh, I also choose to do a complete factory reset …

So with a new updated Vera in hand, I set off to try again and I did exactly the same this as directed by the wiki link above but this time added the I_sonos.xml file and the Sonos device again appeared, I updated the settings and went to the Scene tab to try and make a file play.

Interestingly this time the Device had a red circle with a diagonal line through it, I could do nothing with it. I recalled seeing a related post that (i believed) talked about refreshing your browser which I did, but the device disappeared again!!? I looked for it everywhere, the files were still there, but the device had gone.

Sadly with time against me, I decided to call it a night. I sincerely hope I have a better day tomorrow with Vera. I’d waited so long to experience this device and it’s been a frustrating first date experience (so far), but this relationship is intended to be long term and not just a one night stand. šŸ˜‰

Stay connected to see if I can at least get to second base and finally start to fondel a Device šŸ˜‰
